LAS TERRENAS - Samaná - RD
Las Terrenas could easily be somewhere else in the Caribbean, on one of those tiny islands barely visible on the map, islands made to measure for those living there !
I´ts no surprise that some 25 years ago a group of Europeans settled in these parts and began to give a special character to the development of tourism in this tiny village of fishing folk. Everyday conversation today includes French, Italian, German and English as well as the idiosyncratic form of Spanish used by the locals full of “l” s instead of “r” s.
The village has developed along the bustling main street frequented by “conchos” (motorbike taxis). The main shops, businesses, offices and supermarkets are to be found here. The main street reaches the beach and then becomes a small coastal road where the majority of tourist residences, hotels and the Fishermens´ Village – the true nocturnal soul of Las Terrenas - are to be found. These old fishermens´ huts have been converted over the years into chic bars, restaurants and boutiques. At nighttime the area comes to life and is the ideal place to enjoy an evening at the shores edge.
The merits of Las Terrenas are obvious as it boasts some of the best beaches along this picture-postcard coastline of palm trees and crystal clear turquoise waters. 18 kilometers of endless beaches guarantee peace and tranquility even in high season as well as all the services you require. And last, but not least, an unusual phenomenon in Dominican Republic, the beaches here really are public, devoid of private resorts denying access to passers by.
