The Dominican Republic really has something for everyone. For those dreaming of being
on a one to one basis with nature visiting Samaná Peninsula on the north coast
is like setting a chair on your own porch !
The beauty of Samaná lies in its simplicity. Here is where immaculate beaches serve as the threshold to vividly colored coral reefs while cool fresh water cascades through lush forests. Although Samaná is a principal destination for ecotourism and nature lovers, some visitors are attracted to this unique peninsula to interact with the humpbacked whales, after all, Samaná is home to one of the biggest breeding grounds for this magnificent mammals.
Although the beauty of Samaná is legendary, its history sounds more like a fairytale ! Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1492 during his voyage of discovery of the New World. but the area was not populated until 1756 when people began emigrating here from the Canary Islands. Samaná soon became a hideout for pirates. Later, Napoleon Bonaparte came into possession followed shortly after by the freed American slaves.
Because of its history and mixture of cultures Samaná has become the home of one of the most impressive mixes of race in Dominican Republic - American descendants of Afro-American inhabitants mixed with French, Spanish and Italian. Not only does this mean that the locals look different from their Dominican brothers, it means that the food and even the language have their own particular twist.
The Samaná Peninsula is the ideal destination for nature lovers, the adventurous and the sporting. Discover its charm by visiting the rural villages, fascinating caves and caverns, keys and atolls scattered throughout the bay, rolling green hills, massive coconut groves, forests, streams, cliffs, inlets and of course the marvelous and numerous beaches with turquoise waters, hidden away, solitary, wild …
