Christopher Columbus landed on the island in 1492 during his voyage of discovery of the New World. but the area was not populated until 1756 when people began emigrating here from the Canary Islands. Samaná soon became a hideout for pirates. Later, Napoleon Bonaparte came into possession followed shortly after by the freed American slaves.
